How are you screening 2nd photographers you hire for larger weddings?

The last photographer I hired for a larger wedding turned out to be a headache.  His understanding of weddings wasn't what he claimed it to be and honestly I could keep going.

What I would like to figure out is if there are any sources, kind of like Angie's List or Trip Advisor that is for 2nd shooters?  I want to hire with confidence and not have to spend time during the event showing them what they should be doing.

Does that make sense?

Not a clue, I have to go off of gut feeling when speaking with them.

You simply can't trust an unknown in an important role. I shot a couple large weddings alone back in the day because that was easier than baby sitting an inexperienced second shooter. When you find a competent back up shooter, do whatever you have to do to KEEP them, or find an interested party and train the hell out of them.....

Why so serious?
