Best way to clarify with someone that MP is not the most important feature of camera

9 years 4 months ago #409090 by Stacy Craig
I'm helping a friend buy her first camera.  Actually she emailed me last night with 3 different cameras and all she kept referencing was MP this and MP that.  I told her that wasn't most important feature of camera and she still keeps coming back to that.  "Well that camera has the most MP out of all of them".  She is comparing a Nikon D810 to a Canon 7D Mark II.  LOL she is all over the place.  She's a good friend, so I'm putting up with her thickness here.  But really, how do you break the news to someone about this?

Don't even try. Sounds like her mind is made up and the cameras she's looking at are pretty good anyway even if they do have to many MP's. Look at it this way, even if she buy's one of them because of the MP's, she'll still have a very good camera.

Yes, I agree.  It was kind of a frustrating conversation.  After all she came to me asking for my opinion, saying that she didn't know much about cameras and wanted to take good photos like mine, so needed a good camera.  And yes, I found that remark humorous too.  I wish it was all about the camera!

Well there's nothing wrong with wanting the "best" camera. If MP meant nothing, why did the D800/D810 sell so well. It can be beneficial. Also why worry if she ends up with better gear than you, maybe she'll let you borrow it?.....:P

Why so serious?

I like the direction Effron is going.  Also have her buy all the big telezoom lenses you would like to use but don't want to buy.  Then become better friends with her.  She'll need a good friend to show her the ropes.

Well, it's difficult to disagree with the above advice.

Frankly, if she's a good enough friend, have a talk with her about how insulting it is to hear how all that is needed to do your work is a decent camera. And that acquiring competence at any skill requires time and devotion.

Then let her know that the D810 excels at exposing poor technique. All of those pixels are very unforgiving. Beginners usually don't have good technique.

But hey, encourage your brand in case she wants to unload equipment later, cheap :-)

 :agree:
My thoughts exactly.
Hell even if she went with an 810 and some great glass you could always get an adapter to use her glass. But yeah she if she goes down that path will soon discover that the equipment does not make the picture, it mere takes the picture, and if the picture maker does not know what they are doing, then there is nothing worth taking.

Sure isn't the worst thing I've heard from a photographer.  *Or a soon to be photographer.  If she wants to believe that, and is adamant about it, leave her be.

First Camera... D800, someone has just gotten her income tax back and got some money.

I like what everyone else has said. Nothing much for you to do if she is set on a certain camera.

It's too late for her, game over.    Seriously though, make a point about it.  If she listens, great, if not.  Be a friend and support her decision.  As pointed out already, the cameras she is looking at are very good.  So frankly she can't make a bad decision here.

Honestly, when I bought my first camera, I thought the same thing.  It wasn't till some time after that I realized the hard way.
