Whats with the price difference between SD and CF memory cards?

Corky question, but it's something I just noticed.  The price difference between an SD card and a CF is pretty larger.  Why is that? If you have two of the exact same size cards and transfer rates, why the difference?

Canon 7D, 15-85mm, 18-55mm, 70-200mm, 100mm Macro, Sigma 120-300mm, Speedlite 430EX II

Perhaps because CF are old, and more costly to produce

Economies of scale. CF never really caught on (too large, too flimsy and prone to damage IMO). When you have fixed costs, the more units you can produce, the lower per-unit overhead you have. Clearly, SD won that battle (over CF, memory stick, etc) because it has the right combination of features that the consumer wants.

Frankly, I can't disagree. I think SD cards rock. That's one of the reasons I'm not 100% committed to the Nikon D800. Given the cost of memory devices, I think compatibility for older, smaller cards is a non-issue. Nikon should have severed the ties to that format.

Again, IMO.

I'm still baffled that anyone is still using this card format!
