Craigslist scammers

9 years 4 months ago #413312 by Luca
I just posted an old lens for sale on Craigslist and getting strange numbers texting me offering to paypal money to me for this "item".  This seems kind of fishy.

What's the angle scammers are doing on Craigslist these days?  If they paypal money to me, is there any risk to me?

As long as you transfer your money from paypal to a separate bank account, then drain that account PRIOR to sending item,  you'd be safe. I wouldn't trust paypal as far as I could throw the continent.....
The scam is they will send you money and upon receiving lens claim with paypal it was missing or damaged, etc.  Paypal locks up your money and you have neither the funds or the lens. Then its YOUR responsibility to get proof you sent it......

Why so serious?

Tell them to Western Union you he money.  That will weed out the dirt bags really fast.

Transferring the money out from PayPal will not help you. If the "customer" puts in a claim PayPal will hose up your account.

CL procedure: local sale only, no "agents", cash only, in person. Meet at a neutral location. No exceptions.

Stick to that, ignore everyone else, and you shouldn't have any trouble.

As for scams, all of these techniques are well documented on the web. Google for details.

Unfortunately there are some Western Union scams as well.
I agree with Gary, state local only, and cash only. Also I like to say that I will only meet at a bank, or a local Police station to do the deal. Because I know that at one point there were some robberies in some cities when meeting to do the deal. There were even people who would sell you an item then follow you home, and then rob your home later too. Which when I lived in Az would have pretty much impossible for anyone to try with me. We lived out in the sticks, so trying that would have been obvious, that and I always wore my firearm when making a deal.

How can you possibly have things  to worry about with Western Union?  You go there, get cash and you leave.

That's why I mentioned draining the bank account as well prior to shipping. You can only do it once, and Paypal will get very mad. (I know  from experience).
Its too bad we can't get the market place section of this site off the ground.....:(

I can't stand Craigslist to be honest with you.  To many scammers.  But what choice do you have?
