Is there a way to retrieve deleted files?

I accidentally messed up last night and deleted images from my memory card.  Is there a way to bring back these files even after I have taken one photo with the same card?

I'm pretty sure that once you take a photo on the that card, what ever was on there is gone.

The above is not entirely correct.

When you take another photograph a directory entry is made for the new file, and disk blocks are used for the image. Which blocks are used can not be predicted. The new image may overwrite blocks from one, two or more images that were there before.

So you can't really tell if any of the deleted files can be recovered until you try. You may be partially successful.

News to me, I thought if you took another shot, the chance for recovery was gone.  Good to know.

Higher end memory cards used to include software to retrieve deleted files (not sure if they still do though). A visit to the memory cards maker may result in recovery software as long as they hadn't been overwritten. Here's a link to San Disk recovery software link for their products... If a card has been reformatted it may not be possible to recover the images though.

After experiencing such data loss troubles a couple of times, I really have learned the deleted or lost memory card or
hard drive data really could be restored back with the help of data recovery
software as long as the original stuffs are not rewritten by anything new. So,
if you do really have no success to retrieve your deleted files back. You also
can take chances with memory card photo recovery software. And also never
forget to prepare data backups well in advance.
Here are more clues to restore deleted data back:
how to recover photos from memory card
Or Photo Recovery Information
Hope these words ca help someone there.
