The greatest way to learn is to make mistakes, post them here and ask for comments.
Then you use the ones you like. as you might get some conflicting crits.

If you know the basic 'rules' of composition (Rule of thirds, etc), you are good to go.

Technically know what shutterspeeds to use with what lens to avoid/use a tripod.
Shoot at all f-stops (Lens openings) to see the difference in results, specially at close-ups.
Shoot at all ISO's and blow them up to 100% so you can see the loss in quality of the high ISO's and what you will be happy with.

I think you need to say what gear you have and what program you are planning to process with, so you can find the perfect friend.

Good luck and ENJOY!

Well greetings, and welcome to the forum. First do not be afraid to post questions. Since you are new to the whole forum thing, the first piece of advice I would give is grow a thick skin. This is because some people will, or may come off as coarse. Not so much so on this forum. It is best if you are not sensitive about things. I know the only time I am sensitive is when I shave with a dull razor, then my neck feels a bit raw. Watch the videos posted on here. Especially true in regards to post processing work on images, which you will eventually need to learn. You can start with free programs like GIMP, and Picassa. I do not use either but instead use Photoshop, and am playing with a couple of others. If you are not computer savvy then you want a basic program because Photoshop is not it. Again do not be afraid to ask or join in.

Exceptionally good advice for any artist, period.

Not so much so on this forum.

Well, depends upon who you're referring to.

The rest of the above, +1.
