How are you photographing lifestyle portraits?

Are you shooting them in staged studio or will you get out into actual places to take these shots?  I always feel limited in a studio, but then I wonder if out and about, do you run into permission issues?

Lifestyle shots can/should be done anywhere.

Almost all public property is fair game, unless there is a local ordinance. Or ordnance. Anyway...

Private property, you can often get away with picture taking, but you must be aware that you can be asked to cease or vacate. And you should, politely. But otherwise, the public right of way should give you lots of ideas and opportunities.

Don't forget the victim's home.

Agree, anywhere.  I've shot in public, studio and even their home.

You might need to check out places you're considering and it might depend on where you live. Many places are now limiting camera equipment that may be brought in or you might need to get a permit or pay a fee. Doing photo shoots with clients may be considered to be conducting business on the property. Even if it's public property it's usually shared space available for everyone in the community and may have restrictions on being used for business purposes.

I think the professional way to handle it is to find out ahead of time and get any needed permit or property release signed, etc. I think that tells clients that you're a pro who makes sure everything is taken care of. You'd also probably be less likely to have a situation of getting there and being told you can't do a photo shoot and end up inconveniencing a client.

It could also put you potentially in a position of liability if you arrange a shoot somewhere and any sort of injury or accident happens (which is why professional photographers usually make sure they have insurance coverage).
