Photographers that say they are "published"

Tell me how do you feel about this question.  During a photography meet up group yesterday, I noticed a small group who's discussion was focused on talking about the different places they had been "published".  What I found interesting and worthy of starting a thread here was all of them with the exception of one photographer, were naming off websites.  Their language used to describe being published was no different than the photographer who had been published in a physical magazine.

My question is:  Do you feel being published digitally carry's the same recognition and prestige as being published in a physical magazine?

Not necessarily. To actually be published a photo would need to be used by a magazine or other similar outlet (print and/or digital media) with payment for licensing/usage. Usually there would be a photo credit (or a byline for written work) and the publication would have editors making the selection and editing placement of the photo, length of the article, etc.

Getting a photo on a website could be meaningless - just about anybody can throw a website online, it doesn't even need to be a legit registered business. There seem to be plenty of sites that are apparently willing to take and use just about any photos given to them; usually there doesn't seem to be any compensation to the person who provided the photo. If people think that's being published, they may just be uninformed or maybe deluding themselves and/or others.

Depends like Sharon said. I can post a picture on a forum/facebook and claim I'm published. LOL.

I've had my pictures "published" in the Photography Talk coffee table book that came out a year or two ago (that was kinda cool).

I've been "published" on the Asian Private Banker website ( asianprivatebanker.com/events/ ) nearly all the photos there are mine (not the newest one though, my price has gone up lately and they're not hiring me as much as they used to ;) ).

No magazines that I know of, but I've never tried.

  1. I've got "published"shots in both print & electronic mediums... With the switch to digital, many print publications are falling by the wayside, and  thus are harder to get recognition in...That said, I don't feel "getting published" is that big of a deal...

Published is published in my book.  And seeing that digital is taking over print, I would say either or is relevant.

Rather than out and out disagreeing, I'll ask: do you refer to magazines? Books? What?

There is nothing better than printing your images on paper/etc and hanging them on the wall. "Print" is not ever going to go away.

I'm going to agree with Gary on this topic.  Having a print in your hand is border line indescribably different in a very positive way.  I don't mean to discount getting published online, I just feel print at least right now today, is much more desirable.

magazine or digital, it's published either way.  Now if someone asks where, I don't try to hide or mask one over the other.
