Best practice for getting started in wedding photography?

9 years 1 month ago #424153 by Mark Saunder
Let's say you have your camera and lenses, what other gear would be considered a must have for getting started in wedding photography?

How about general getting started tips?  It's my goal this summer to do my first paid wedding.  I shot a wedding in November 2014 which was for a friend and one in May 2014 which I was a second shooter.  I really enjoyed both experiences and would like to try making a go at this.

Any suggestions or tips would be really appreciated.  Thank you

Mark

It's a super competitive market out there.  I would scoop up as much experience and start to network before you leave your existing job.

I would work as a second shooter for a while and ask the photographers you are working with if they can show you what they do post shooting. Weddings are an event that you can not pause or go back and reshoot if you do not get the shots. It is important to really know the flow of a wedding with your eyes closed. The post production side of the wedding is super important as you are telling a story with the images. I know when I shot weddings as a young photographer my mentor told me that I should know every shot that I need to get to tell the story before I go and shoot on my own.

Good luck.

You all are pretty much on the same note: second shooter.  Well, thank you.  Now I know where I need to be pointed.

Erm, Second Shooter to more than one photographer.  Different photographers will have different approaches.
