Do you meet photography clients at their home for first meeting?

I generally prefer to meet clients in public spaces myself.  I have a good friend who is doing a lot with senior and wedding portraits and she was asking me this morning about meeting new clients at their home.  Personally I advised against it, and just wanted to get some additional opinions from here.

IMO there are just to many crazies out there.  Meeting in public space, especially if you are a woman is the smart way to prevent difficult situations with the wrong people.

What do you think?

The type work I've done (non-photography related) working with infants has included doing home visits with families on my caseload. We had the necessary support - our agency was insured, we turned in a schedule and called in any daily changes so someone knew where we were, etc. I was a phone call away from our central office if I ever needed help or had questions.

Being out there on your own I think is a different situation. Your friend would probably need insurance, would need to leave the client info. somewhere that her family would know where she is, etc. Most of the time she might be fine but she doesn't need to chance walking into an unstable situation. She'd probably need to think about getting some training on how to protect herself (and hopefully never have to use it). She'd need to be prepared to deal with any problem situation she inadvertently walks into (where there may be a need to report it to the police or to child protective services etc.).
