How many of your photos are you actually printing?

So here's an interesting thought:  Camera companies are pushing higher and higher resolutions out of cameras that we all use.  Yet most websites throttle the size of your uploads, or the photographer is loading low resolution shots to prevent theft.

So when you think about it, does it make sense to run out and buy the latest tech when what we have isn't getting used to it's full capacity?

That makes sense.  I agree.  MP is overrated IMO

You don't need the higher megapixel cameras to get a good image but that doesn't make them overrated. It just makes them more flexible. You can crop an image a lot more and still get as good of a print as with a lower megapixel camera. Megapixels are not overrated.

:agree:
Yeah pretty much. While yes at the moment I am satisfied with what my 12MP D300 is putting out, when it does die, I will get a higher MP camera, and most likely full frame. You can crop a whole lot more when you have more image resolution to work with. While yes I may not print but .001% of my images, having the ability to print very large, and having it look good is always a happy thing.

If cropping is the only reason to go with higher MP, the only reason I'll need to upgrade, is to get a newer model with less mileage. I hardly ever crop, unless I do sport, which I hardly do anymore.

I usually print something out of any set of photos I take. But I shoot film too so it just depends on what I'm doing. I don't do enlargements bigger than 8x10 or 8 1/2x11; for larger prints there may be some advantage to using a higher mp camera (mine's 12 mp too).
