Dynamic range limited by the firmware in the camera?

I've been meaning to ask this about dynamic range.  So we are talking about how a sensor reads light.  So as example, two separate sensors, EXACTLY the same with different firmware could have different dynamic ranges.  So these limitations are set by the manufactures.  Can these be hacked?

:agree:  it's the sensors that is the culprit

Yeah pretty much so.
I do think that they can eek out some more out of it, but getting the sensor to do so will take quite a bit of work. They are going to have to change both the design, and the sensors material to go further. They were trying to use the black silicon oxide, but I think that is going nowhere. Also I would think that making a four color channel sensor might help. I know it would help with a lot of the color rendition. It would cut down the steps needed to make many colors by adding a yellow channel.

Have any of you tried those firmware hacks that you see lingering around the internet?

Yeah pretty much. I have a thing about voiding a warranty by hacking the cameras OS.

Um, no. Those hacks (a) seem to be targeted to Canon equipment, which I do not use, and (b) if I need a function I prefer to look for a tool designed to meet my requirement. Not gonna mess with my camera's brain.
