Lens sharpness overrated because of Photoshop?

With all the sharpening tools in Photoshop and Lightroom, does lens sharpness even make much of an argument for spending more $$?

No, the lens is still the main sharpness factor.....

Why so serious?

What post processing does is to improve contrast, thus making it appear sharper, and pixel definition as well. It doesn't actually improve the acuity of the image..

It depends upon the sensor as well. The higher the MP count, to some extent, the more demanding it is. Lenses resolutions will need to improve if they keep improving the sensor resolutions.

Depends on the audience.  Different folks have different expectations for sharpness.

Not that I am an expert, but, I would rather capture as much as possible with the original shot that doing something in post.

Oh, golly, yes. Garbage in, garbage out.

Photoshop can't fix blurry, even with their new algorithm (which I understand isn't effective in every case).

Get the best glass you can and you don't need to worry about so much post

These tools do not actually fix sharpness. They just use things like adjusting edge contrast to give the perception of a sharper image.

I good quality lens in the cornerstone of good photography in my opinion. You can have a cheap body with a great lens and get a great shot where as a cheap (softer) lens on a brand new top of the line body will still only give you average results.

There are good reasons why most want the best glass they can get their hands on  ;)

Well also think of it as wearing the wrong reading glasses, or glasses in general to see better, A really good pair makes everything nice, and clear, a bad pair mess up your eyes. You might make things out, but is it not better to be able to see clearly in the first place?
