Getting published online, is NOT "really published"?

9 years 1 month ago #432208 by Mason Katz
I was talking to another photographer today about goals.  Which one of mine happens to be getting published one day.  So I rattled off some publications that would be awesome to get published on, and a couple were online sites.  The photographer I was talking too said that getting published online wasn't considered "really getting published".

The guy was somewhat of a jerk, but he went on and on talking about this.  I thought online was the hot spot these days, after all most magazines are moving to online.  right?

Define "published online"? Having an image used on a website? On a blog? In an e-zine?

Both are equally prestigious, it comes more with what the magazine is rather than what format it is in. National Geographic for example would be an achievement in print or online imo. He just needs to get with the times as far as I'm concerned

Speaking of which, are there services that actively promote you to galleries?

Published is published whether hard copy or online, getting paid is the main consideration!

Really it depends on who is using the image. I would not claim being published on some no name blog, but if it was on some of the more popular well known one, or online versions of news/magazine then yes. Sites like Getty, or the stock sites, no. Technically if you put any of your photos online then you are publishing them.
Merriam-Webster
publish
transitive verb1 a :  to make generally known b :  to make public announcement of 2 a :  to disseminate to the public b :  to produce or release for distribution; specifically :  print 2c c :  to issue the work of (an author) intransitive verb1 :  to put out an edition 2 :  to have one's work accepted for publication

Does it really matter?  If you think you are published and you have been in a magazine or online, that's up to you.  Not others to decide.
