How to make new born smile for photography

9 years 3 days ago #432724 by Tim Entin
I photographed a young family yesterday and for the life of me couldn't get the newborn to smile.  I know I'm a rookie with young ones, but there must be a easier way.   I'm open and happy to receive tips on this.  Thanks!

One would conclude that you do not have children.

You do not get a newborn to smile. If you capture a smile because they happened to move those muscles at the right time, then good for you. We're often lucky that way.

Now, if you mean "baby" (anything past 3-4 weeks) then you might get lucky by somehow delighting them. Noisy toys perhaps, with bright colors.

Moving on to 3-4 months, you interact with them. The older they are, the easier it gets, as long as they're in a good mood.

Or, you don't worry about it. Smiling is overrated.

With newborns, I just focus on getting them to look at the camera and not be crying

Make sure they are fed, then it depends on the nature of the young one. Some smile easily, some don't......

Why so serious?

Oh boy, look up Lens Frog.  I might be off with the name.  They are squeeky bright flowers and frogs that mount to your lens.  Kids like them.
