Best areas in North America for shooting the Milky Way?

9 years 5 days ago #435502 by Dave Worton
Summer months are nearly here and I'd like to rent an RV and do some traveling for 3-4 weeks.  I can work from the road so I have that covered.  I would like to plan my stops around places that are best photographed at night.  Ideally where the Milky Way can be easily photographed.  If you know of some notable spots, please post them.

Thank you

Dave

If you're on the east coast ... Cherry Springs State Park, Coudersport, Pennsylvannia.

I believe that farther south is better. And you'll want someplace dark.

Really dark. This might be helpful:

Try the southern end of Baja, Mexico.

Central Adirondacks are as good as any, better than most spots in the east. Out west there are many spots. See Hook's link....

Why so serious?

Tonight I shall be at the McDonnell Observatory for a Star Party. I hope to get something interesting while I'm out in the middle of nowhere.

Wouldn't you get a good view up towards Alaska?

Too far north.  The best bits of the Milky Way are south of the Equator.  Which can be seen, in part at least, from the most southern regions of the Lower48.  But not so much from AK.

Yep, you'll want to take a trip south of the border, where you can hear the mariachi play

I learned that the better part is visible in the fall, not now. And the farther south, the better.
