Second photographer just not working out

9 years 3 days ago #435882 by MYoung
Morning rant:  So I shot a wedding this past weekend and I had a second photographer I hired from CL (yeah, I know) there with me. This guy was the most insubordinate person I have EVER worked with.  The positions I asked him to cover, he didn't.  He took off for a lunch break without telling me (it was during the wedding reception) and wasn't at the time we spoke about in the morning!

Now I'm looking at his photos, which should have been in RAW, these are all in JPEG.  What a @#$#%.  I'm so irritated.  Oh, and 4 photos so far are of his feet!  OMG, I'm thinking the examples this guy showed me to get this job, can't be his.  There is a night and day difference in image quality.

I need a break!

Take a deep breath. Count to... wherever you need to. ;)

Maybe you must make a formal list of the things he fumbled and pay him half.
It is contract break. (Here, anyway.)

Tell him not to give your name for references. You do not have any good feedback.
He needs to hear (and feel - his wallet) it.

Next time YOU ask for previous job references.

:agree: If he has "his work" posted online, use tineye to see if if was stolen off the web.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Tineye's a good idea John, so is getting references Hassner. I don't think you're likely to find a good qualified second shooter on craigslist. Take a look at something like ASMP's find-a-photographer listings or try networking with other pro photographers or at photography exhibits and clubs etc. to make contacts so you can ask around who they use as assistants.

Probably a bad question but, if a guy has never worked as a second shooter before, where will he get reference's from?

You need to get involved with a local college, maybe join a photography club so you can vett these second shooter candidates better. Hiring off Craig's list is simply playing Russian roulette with an automatic, as you well know by now. Scrape it together the best you can and find a reliable second, and pay that person well to keep them....

Why so serious?

A family member needed a portfolio of her make-up work.

I was busy, so she went to see the lecturer at a photography school.
He made her connect with his best final year student.
The student was serious and was working after hours on her own portfolio to find work as soon as she finished.
Match made.

Maybe one of the best students there want to make some money and experience over a weekend?
The lecturers know the strengths of their students.
