Will different polarized filters leave different colored tints in photos?

9 years 3 days ago #436390 by MM Images
Another photographer was telling me yesterday that I need to watch out what polarized filter I use because many will leave different tints in my photos.  I thought he was talking about 10 stop filters, but he clarified polarized filters.  I was surprised because these are generally at best 2 stops right?  So I can't image there being that much of tints left behind.

Have you experienced this, which polarized filters if that being the case give you close to '0' tints?

If they do, it will be minor

Quality "polarizers" will not be a problem with color casts.....

Why so serious?

If you buy a $5 polarized filter from China, you can bet you will get some sort of color cast going on.

I have never bought a cheap polarized filter; I have bought moderate-priced.  Never seen a problem.  It "should" be grey, so there will be no color cast.

Same here, I was told there are a few things you don't skimp on with photography.  Tripod is one, and filters is the second.

I'm sure, just look at the 10 stop filters.  This is where you can see evidence of such color casting greater

Canon 5D Mark II, 30D, 40D, 50 1.2L, 16-35 2.8L Mark II, 24-105 4L IS, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 85 1.8, 4 x 580 EX(II)

And the consensus on PT is your friend is wrong. The only difference I ever see in polarizers is their density between manufacturers. Granted if you go cheap it can happen, but that is true for any filter you buy, not just polarizers.

I have never had a polarizer leave a tint to an image. I did however just purchase a cheap Tiffen 10 Stop ND filter and for color images it removes all green colors and replaces them with and orange/brownish color. The other colors appear to be unaffected. The resulting color image almost looks like a color infra red image. I bought it mostly for B&W so it's no big deal and worth the 25 bucks I paid for it.

 Reminds me of this filter set my neighbor bought from eBay last year for $18.  There were 3 filters he got    Need I say more?! OMG, they were the worst, if memory is correct one of these simply fell apart while he was trying to screw it on his lens.  But the color casting was horrible with these.

You definitely don't want to buy cheap filters, I tried when I first got started and it was junk
