How to calculate commerical license fee of photo?

Can someone explain how this is determined please?  I might have some commercial opportunities coming up and I want to know this.

I wish it was easy, but it's not.

Got to Getty Images and/or other stock photo sites, and input the parameters of the usage to get you into the ballpark.

Then figure that they want your image, not a stock image. That increases their cost.

Best of luck.

Gary brings a painful truth to this, it's not a one size fit all equation here.  There are many variables that need to be taken in account.  Gary's idea is about the best I would be able to suggest as well.  Good luck

Try pro photographer organizations like http://asmp.org or PPA. You could take a look at The Photo District News http://www/pdnonline.com which covers commercial photography although I don't know that they give resources for pricing (try PhotoServe or PhotoSource on there).

There are many of what are referred to as 'photo rights grab sites' that seem to target amateurs or photographers new to licensing usage of their photos. Those sites usually want photos to use from now on for low fees (which means they could keep reselling your photo and you won't get any further payment, they will). If you're approached or contacted by a company please look them up, do a search and see what you can find out. There are even legit companies that I think are taking advantage of people and probably count on people being uninformed.

I'd look at Terms & Conditions and watch for (and avoid using) terms that state you retain rights BUT - they can sublicense, redistribute, transfer, modify - and on and on.
