DJI F550 Hexacopter crash after flight above the clouds

Any drone pilots here?  I've been looking at getting one and just came across this video.  I know what this guy did was against the law.  I'm surprise they don't build in altitude limiters into these drones to prevent aviation accidents?

So would this be a ticket if caught?

FAA would most likely nail this guy with a fine.  The big problem here is the danger to civilian aviation.

2000-10,000 USD fine if caught in the US and possible jail time if he was in airspace and endangered anybody.(I'm a drone flyer btw).

2 things:

1.  Really?  That is a steep fine.  (for which I'm glad to hear from a safety stand point)
2.  How would they enforce something like this?

I'm surprised, but not surprised about the fine cost.  They should be to keep people from endangering the aviation crowd

They're recording video and have GPS, they can be tracked back to the person operating it (may not be but can be, depending on condition once it crashes and is recovered). FAA is supposed to be in the process of establishing new rules and regs including possible required training, obtaining a license, etc.

They're currently legal for amateur use but have to be flown within certain guidelines (regarding height and distance, etc.) including that the person operating has to keep it in view the whole time. Look up UAVs to find out what's current (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles).

You know, at the beginning you can see who he is, about 3 sec. in it would be possible to get a real clear picture of him...

He's right in his last comment that he probably shouldn't have done this; seems like he's lucky it didn't come down and crash into a neighbor's car or kid playing in a back yard or something.

edit - Drones happened to be on our local news this evening, they said the FAA is considering rules such as limits of 500 feet and 100 mph, and an aeronautical knowledge test that would have to be passed to operate one.

The thing with an altitude limiter is that you'd have to set it to a specific altitude so it would either be easy to bipass, or people living above a certain elevation wouldn't be able to fly it.
