Let's talk about IR Cameras and IR converted cameras

What do you think about IR in general? Better yet, what do you think would make the best IR converted camera? Can they convert point and shoot camera's to shoot IR? I was just looking at some incredible IR photos in the gallery here and would like to get involved myself. So looking for the most inexpensive IR conversion I can get my hands on.

Don't look at me, I didn't do it :)

You also have another outfit that does the conversions ( maxmax.com ) & there are likely a few others. These two are the better known ones...

I`m a Ir fanatic,it`s not for everyone especially the color Ir where any colors is acceptable.Lifepixel and Maxmax are the two most well known but there are others that will convert your camera at a lower price. There are converted cameras on sale at Ebay,,type in infrared cameras....
You will have to decide which filter you will want since there a lot of filters available,I started with a 720nm D70,gives color and b/w,830nm and up for b/w,mine is 665nm for more color than the 720nm
plus with software awesome b/w.Most cameras can be converted if you get someone to do it but there is a problem with 'hotspot' with some lenses. The typical focusing calibration is for 18-70mm lens that`s
why it`s recommended to shoot at f8 to compensate for focusing differences between ir and visible light. If you plan on using a specific lens you can have that lens used as the calibration lens for focusing.Processing for color can be a journey into the unknown where anything goes...
This is my Ir home, feel free to browse, join when you feel comfortable..there are lots of work flow there.

Hope this helps
KEH.Com do sells converted Ir cameras occassionally but you have to call them to find out the filter.

I had them convert a Canon 20D, and I think they did a great job.

IR is fun. I enjoyed shooting IR film, so I figured I'd enjoy shooting IR digital. IR digital is a lot better! Unless you've got a problem with the size of the camera I'd suggest finding an older used or refurbished DSLR for the conversion. You can find the "obsolete" entry level models for a couple hundred dollars.

What do they charge for converting a camera? I'm guessing that voids out warranty?

Yep,out goes the warranty.Price varies from converting companies and models.Right now there is one available at keh.com but you will have to call to find out which filter is installed.
There is a lot more to color Ir than the standard 'channel swap'...white clouds and blue skies with silvery vegetation. My software of choice is Nik`s Color Efex3,for b/w Silver Efex2.
