macro lens for A330

I want to get a macro lens for my A330, but can't decide between getting something like the Tamron 90mm or Sigma 105mm as a dedicated macro lens. Or opting for one of the 70-300mm offerings with a macro option? The only lens I have at the moment is the 18-55 Sony kit lens. Any thoughts?

Go with the Tamron 70-300mm Di Macro Lens

Once you use a dedicated macro lens such as the Sigma 105 or the Tamron you will never go back to a multi-use lens that also says that it can do "macro". One macro lens that you may want to consider on your Sony is the Sigma EX 150 f2.8 macro. I do not have one but I know the lens gets great reviews

If you are wanting true macro then go with the Sony, Minolta, Tamron, or Sigma dedicated macro's (not that they have to be used only for macro. A second option would also be to get a good set of Kenko extension tubes and use them with your kit lens if you are wanting more of close-up (flowers, bugs etc.) the set of three tubes cost around $150 or so from B&H, the one pic in my profile was taken with the Tamron 70-200 and a 36mm macro tube. Unlike close-up filters you are not introducing any glass in the path of the image to sensor just moving the rear element of the lens farther from the sensor resulting in a larger projection onto the sensor and a changing of focus distance.

I use a Minolta X700 manual focus 35mm camera I've had since 1985. I bought a true 1:1 Macro a number of years ago and will never part with it. I have a Vivitar Series 1 (M/MD) 105mm 1:2.5 (to 32) VMC 1:1 Macro Telephoto 52mm (filter size) lens. If you really want to get close with hardly any depth of field and super sharp focusing, this is the lens. It is so sensitive that I almost always have to use a tripod. It was ever so slightly used (still looks new) and I paid a little over $200 for it. I rarely see them for sale anymore. Weight is 1 lb 7.8oz (677g) with both caps on. This lens is a one piece lens unlike alot of two piece Macro lenses.

I was just talking yesterday to some friends about a good macro lens for my a100. They all agreed that the Sigma 105 f2.8 EX DG macro is one of the best. (They all do excellent macros). It is a 1:1 lens whereas the 70-300 is not. As mentioned extension tubes are worth looking into too.

I have the Lester Dine iteration of the Vivitar Series One macro lens. I also have 3 other dedicated macro lenses....Zooms with a "macro" function can't hold a candle to a true macro lens...Yeah, you can do macro with a prime lens & extension tubes or close up diopters (filters), but you lose infinity focus & you don't have a variable magnification ratio at your disposal that a true macro provides. You have to add/subtract tubes to change the ratio & then only certain ones can be set....Save up for a true flat field macro, you will be glad you did...As for which one, they all will give you good results as long as your technique is correct. Major differences will be in focal length (the longer, the more expensive) & build quality. There is a Vivitar 100mm F3.5 macro that can be had for little money, it's called the plastic fantastic, as it has excellent optics, but a build quality that leaves something to be desired...Ask 10 different people with macro lenses what is the best one & they will all say it's the one they own...

I agree with the majority, if you can afford it... get a true macro lens and you'll never look back.
