Banding in Photos

I recently did a shoot with a Bridge in the area I was visiting. I'll give you some background info first. I shoot with my Nikon D800 and I use RAW as my save type. I brought the image into Lightroom and processed it. I exported the file at 100 quality from Lightroom. Even with this I am getting some banding in the sky. I don't fully understand why but what could this be? Here is the photo.

Do computers not handle this group of colours well or is there something going on with my save type that is causing this. I really don't understand it and it is bothering me.

Edit: I forgot to mention, in the file on PS/Lightroom there is no banding viewable. Also, the file was exported in the sRGB colour space. Does sRGB not handle those deep blues well?

Looking forward to your replies, thanks

That's a JPG, right? What heppens with a PNG?  Or a BMP? or a TIFF?

It could be a lossy compression artifact caused by similar colors being compressed too much. The formats above do not use lossy compression (by default).

Lot of questions in here.

1. sRGB is a smaller gamut designed for less expensive computer monitors as opposed to printers etc that can reproduce a wider range of tones and colors.
2. Are you processing this as 8 bit or 16 bit? Process from raw as a 16 bit and you should see the banding decrease.

Any time you get very subtle transitions within a color spectrum you run the risk of banding. It's just one of those things like chromatic aboration that is unique to the digital process.

I'll see what a png looks like. None of this explains why the image all of a sudden seems to get worse, when uploading high quality with no compression to websites such as flickr.

Here is a thread that might help with that.... not sure if you fall into any of these situations.

Um, you upload a jpg, you get compression. Even the highest quality JPG has lossy compression. Can't stop it. If you download the original of your image and look at it at full size, there is no banding. The banding appears when the website resizes and compresses the file to minimize bandwidth and file transfer time.

Not a thing you can do about it. Hope that folks bother looking at a higher resolution (and therefore, higher quality) version of the image.
