Photography Tip: Creating dramatic portraits with dark backgrounds

It isn't awful but he missed the second catchlight when doing a split. The "key" to a good split light is to have a touch of light in far eye. The eye close to the light is easy to catch. The further away one isn't. You have to get the light to cross the bridge of the nose at just the right angle.

I find it much easier to control the darkness of the background using a flag (aka a Cutter, which is really just a type of flag). The 45 degree Rembrandt isn't quite there either. The light needs to be higher (and aimed down a bit). But hey, it's just another YouTube expert.

Nice work for a very simple and basic setup. Shows that anyone can do it.

And for all you guys who want to add... Who does he think he is to attack a YouTube guru??!!

I learned portrait lighting 25 years ago from the best in portraiture. There were no YouTube giants to be found back then. There were only those who learned from a master and passed it down the line. Till it reached silly students like me. ;)

Thats all good and well, but, what settings was he using on the camera to get the shots he was getting. And, how strong a light was he useing?????????
