But it can also be quite competitive and difficult to differentiate yourself. Below are some tips to ensure you're shooting the best fashion photographs.

  1. Don't Be Afraid to Move Around

Rather than waiting for your model to move just the right way and create the perfect shot, take a photo and then move around the set. This will allow you to capture as many different angles as possible. You may be surprised by what comes through when you do this simple act, rather than remaining stationary the entire time and shooting from one area of the room only. See if crouching down low, climbing a ladder, or shooting with your camera at an odd angle will get you the shots you're looking for.

  1. Be Confident When Directing Models

As a fashion photographer, you should head into a shoot knowing what your goals are and what types of photos you need to capture for a job well done. This requires that you direct your models so they know what to do to help you get the shots you need. But the key is to be confident when giving directions. Avoid showing any signs of stress, uncertainty, or nervousness. These feelings will inevitably affect your model, so you instead want to exude self-assuredness and make everyone in the room comfortable in your abilities.

  1. Prepare Ahead of Time

Before any fashion shoot, do your research and then bring along helpful tools. For example, have tear sheets of images you'd like to use as inspiration. It's also a great idea to develop your shot list ahead of time and take the time to rehearse composition and technique for the shots you plan on getting. And, of course, have the studio or location prepared ahead of time, along with any necessary clothing or props for the model.

  1. Meter In-Studio Shoots

In-studio fashion shoots are a lot more controlled than on-location shoots, which is why many fashion photographers prefer to work in a studio. In this environment, you can control the conditions, right down to the lighting. But a good tip is to meter every area of the scene in order to prevent unsightly shadows. To do this properly and get an accurate readout, utilize a handheld light meter instead of the in-camera light meter.

  1. Have a Focus

During a fashion shoot, you'll be showcasing clothes, props, hair, and makeup. In addition to bringing all of these elements together, you also need to have a focal point so that the viewer will know what you're promoting. For example, if your focus is on the makeup, use props or clothing that will complement the makeup without taking the focus away from it. The same goes for clothes because you can use hair and makeup that bring out the beauty of the clothing. Work with a makeup artist to deliver the mood of the photo, too. For example, heavy makeup would work for a seductive shoot, while a more natural appearance or lighter colors would be appropriate for a more innocent shoot.
