Your camera's image sensor contains a limited number of pixels, which is the sensor's overall resolution. The senor uses only some of those pixels to create a digital photo. That is the effective resolution. When you buy a camera, look at the specifications for the overall and effective resolutions expressed in megapixels (MP). Effective resolution is a better method to compare one camera to another.
