At the moment of its release, the Canon EOS 7D Mark II was one of the best APS-C format DSLR cameras on the market. Five years have passed since then and technology has evolved, but the EOS 7D Mark II is still worth buying if you are looking for a camera with good image quality, impressive speed, and an affordable price.
This Canon EOS 7D Mark II review should help you decide if this is the right camera for your needs.
Canon 7D Mark II Specs
The Canon EOS 7D Mark II revolves around a 20 MP APS-C CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6 image processors with 14-bit processing. At first glance, the camera has the same sensor as the original 7D, but the company claims it has been improved in order to produce lower noise at higher ISOs.
Overall, the Canon EOS 7D Mark II makes good results in low-light conditions since it has a native sensitivity range of ISO 100 – 16,000 (expandable to ISO 51,200). Also, the camera features a 150,000-pixel RGB + IR metering sensor that enhances speed and accuracy in subject recognition and analysis.
The camera uses the Dual Pixel AF technology and it has 65 all cross-type AF points. It can keep the focus on the subject even in the extremely dark environment (down to EV-3). Moreover, it has an anti-flicker detection system which will make images better when photographing under artificial light.
Since it has two image processors, the Canon EOS 7D Mark II shoots up to 10 frames per second, and it can capture up to 1090 JPEG, 31 RAW, and 19 RAW + JPEG shots in a single burst. Also, it has a silent shooting mode and shutter speeds up to 1/8000th of a second. All of this makes it a good choice for action photographers.

Canon 7D Mark II Body & Design
The Canon 7D Mark II measures 5.9 x 4.4 x 3.1 inches and weighs 2.0 lb. The camera’s body was built out of magnesium-alloy while its seals are environmentally protected against water and dust. Overall, the camera was built to have a long life, and the company claims that it has shutter durability up to 200,000 cycles.
The viewfinder covers approximately 100% and it allows you to see the main camera settings. On the rear of the camera, there is a 3.0” LCD display with 1.04 million dots. One of the downsides of the Canon 7D Mark II is that it doesn’t have an articulating screen, and it lacks touchscreen capabilities. On the good side, the camera has a top screen, a deep grip, and overall its ergonomics are very good.
The 7D Mark II has a dual card slot and it supports both CF and SD card types. It doesn’t have a built-in Wi-Fi, but it has a built-in GPS.
The camera’s battery life is around 670 shots.
