Canon EOS Rs...If Rumors are True, is This a Game-Changer?
- DIGIC 9 image processor
- Dual card slots
- The same joystick as the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III
- Similar burst shooting as the EOS R
- Fully articulating LCD
- Full weather sealing
The Canon EOS R might soon have a successor - the Canon EOS Rs.
We've been hearing rumors about the upcoming flagship Canon mirrorless camera for months now.
Though an official name for this camera hasn't been released or confirmed by Canon, the rumor mill folks have dubbed it the Canon EOS Rs. There are some rumors about Canon EOS R5 another expensive camera by Canon. Whereas , if you are looking for a cheaper option then Canon EOS M50 camera is better for learning photography.
The latest Canon rumors about this camera are tantalizing to say the least. Of course, rumors are rumors and not fact, so very little is concretely known about what this camera will entail or what it will even be called.
Let's have a look at the latest Canon rumors on the Canon EOS Rs.
Canon EOS Rs Release Date
Canon EOS R
Canon Rumors reports that the expected announcement for this camera is in February 2020, likely before the CP+ show in Japan.
It is safe to assume that the camera will be released for sale relatively quickly after that because Canon will want to give shooters enough time to get familiar with the camera before the opening of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo on July 24.
Canon Rumors: Expect HUGE Sensor Resolution
Canon EOS R
It is expected that the Canon EOS Rs will have a 75-megapixel sensor, which is no doubt designed to go head-to-head with the Sony a7R IV and its 61-megapixel sensor.
The early EOS Rs rumors pegged the sensor at 80-megapixels, and the reason for the "downgrade" to 75 doesn't seem to be apparent.
Whatever the case, this camera will certainly have a high-resolution sensor that turns the market on its head.
This is one reason why people have taken to calling this camera the EOS Rs - it pays homage to the EOS 5DS and 5DSR that debuted four years ago with monster 50.6-megapixel sensors.
Canon EOS Rs Specs
Canon EOS R
According to Canon Rumors, a person familiar with the development of the EOS Rs has confirmed multiple features of the camera, including:
The DIGIC 9 processor is all but a given, because it will debut in the EOS-1D X Mark II in early 2020. Same goes for the joystick.
It's nice to see dual card slots - Canon has gotten a ton of flack for the single card slot on the EOS R.
Additionally, rumor has it that the Canon EOS Rs will have a sensor that's focused more on dynamic range. Since the EOS R can accommodate up to 13.5 EV, the EOS Rs will likely have significantly more range.
The EOS Rs will reportedly also have a larger and more resolute EVF, which is saying something because the EOS R has a killer EVF with 3.6 million dots of resolution. Could the EOS Rs have an EVF with 6 million dots or more? We'll soon find out!
Canon Rumors: IBIS to Be Included on Canon EOS Rs
Canon EOS R
One of my complaints about the EOS R is a lack of in-body image stabilization.
But if rumors are to be believed, the EOS Rs will have IBIS, which along with the superb lens-based stabilization of the RF lenses should give you excellent stabilization possibilities, perhaps even in the range of 7-8 stops or more.
Since the primary competitor to the EOS Rs will undoubtedly be the Sony a7R IV (which has an incredible 5-axis image stabilization system), it makes sense for Canon to come up with something similar (or better, even?) for the EOS Rs.
Canon EOS Rs Rumor Roundup
Canon EOS R
We'll keep updating this article as more rumors come to light about the EOS Rs.
But if even part of the current rumors are true, this camera looks to be a game-changer, certainly for Canon but likely for the industry as a whole.
A 75-megapixel sensor is just astounding, even with the expected poor low-light performance due to the smaller pixels these high-resolution sensors have.
I've had the EOS R for a couple of months now, and it has made me a Canon believer. I love the ergonomics of it, in particular, and that is something that is expected to be carried forward to the EOS Rs.
I can't wait to see what this camera ends up being...I'll keep you posted!
