If you’re looking for a compact camera that is a step above your smartphone, the Canon PowerShot G7 X III may be for you.
It’s small enough to fit in your pocket, while strong enough to allow you to live stream, create stunning 4K video and snap 30fps.
The Canon PowerShot G7 X III just came out at the end of last year and is aimed at vloggers (you can vlog in live mode directly to YouTube) and travellers.
Editor’s Tip: If you’re lacking inspiration at the moment, take a look at MPB’s weekly #mpbthrowback Instagram giveaway. It's #tbt with MPB style: we're inviting people to share a photo they've taken in the past, tell us where they were, how they noticed it, and what kit they were using. Share your photos, revel in the talent of your photography colleagues, and recapture your photography inspiration!
Canon PowerShot G7 X III Specs
The Canon PowerShot G7 X III can shoot 4K video, can livestream directly to YouTube, and can shoot 30fps in raw mode or 8fps with autofocus.
It’s truly built for vloggers and travellers, with features like vertical video capture, microphone sockets, and a touchscreen that can tilt 180-degrees (aka a selfie screen).

Canon PowerShot G7 X III Body & Design
If you’re familiar with the Canon PowerShot G7 X II, then the Canon PowerShot G7 X III isn’t much different in terms of its design.
It still uses the same 24-100mm lens. It still features a selfie touchscreen and it still allows you to directly upload your social media photos using Canon’s Image Gateway service.
The body feels heavy and looks aesthetically pleasing with nice red-on-black accents.
Each dial is heavy enough to not accidentally rotate during shooting and the only true difference between the Canon PowerShot G7 X III and II is that the III features a plastic top plate instead of a metal one, which really doesn’t affect shooting at all.
Canon PowerShot G7 X III Build & Handling
As I mentioned, the Canon Powershot G7 X III features a premium feel. This camera doesn’t feature an electronic viewfinder (again because it’s created for vloggers and travellers) and why would you need one when your touchscreen does everything for you?
My favorite features on this camera are the fact that everything is touch-enabled and Canon’s touchscreen technology is, of course, astounding.
The buttons are all spaced out properly and my one complaint in this department is that the wheel on the rear of the camera could be a little larger, but of course this can be said of many compact cameras.
Finally, the pop-up lens is a nice touch and plenty strong too with a range of 7.5 meters.
Canon PowerShot G7 X III Video Performance
“This video isn’t supposed to be perfect. It’s supposed to be real.”
That’s how AMaeTV’s video review of the Canon PowerShot G7 X III starts and I think this idea perfectly encapsulates what this camera is built for.
As previously discussed, this camera features 4K video at 30p or 1080 video at 60p. It comes with a microphone socket for external sound and you can livestream from it.
