For what it's worth, I think maternity photographers have one of the best jobs any photographer could hope to have.
After all, you're responsible for documenting part of one of the most important journeys a person can take.
No pressure, right?
To help alleviate some of the stress of photographing such an important time in your client's life, consider these do's and don'ts for beautiful maternity photography.
Editor's Tip: Elevate the quality of your maternity photos with beautiful maternity clothes. Shop gowns, crowns, and accessories for maternity photography.
DO Show Your Client Potential Poses for Beautiful Maternity Photography
When you meet with your client, it's one thing to explain the poses you envision for the shoot.
But it's another thing entirely to be able to show her what you have in mind for posing the shots.
Whether you bring sketches of each pose that you have in mind or bring along your portfolio of work to show her images of some of your go-to poses, having a visual aid as you go over the details of the shoot will only help you maximize your ability to make your client look her best.

Even better, as you go over your thoughts on posing, ask for her input.
No one knows how your client feels and what she is capable of doing that she does, so be sure to get her input on how you approach the photoshoot.
You might have a gorgeous pose in mind of the mom-to-be on top of a rock at the beach, as shown above, but if she's not confident in walking across sand or scaling a rock, you need to know that!
DON'T Skimp on the Wardrobe Choices
I'm not a woman, but I know enough to understand that some expecting mothers simply do not feel all that beautiful while they're pregnant.
Don't compound that problem by skimping your client on the wardrobe front...
Though there is a time and a place for the comfort of a big t-shirt and comfy, stretchy pants, a maternity photo shoot is the perfect time to give your client maternity photo clothes that will make her feel beautiful and elegant.
As you can see in the image above, adding dresses for maternity photos into the mix can help you elevate the photo to a whole other level.
Not only does this mom-to-be look like a fashion model, but that impeccable gown from Sew Trendy adds a visual punch with that gorgeous color and the movement of the train.
This isn't to say that every single shot you take should show the expecting mother in a high-fashion pose with a gorgeous maternity gown, but you should certainly make time for images like these!

DO Have Her Tilt Her Head Back
Kate Boggs Photography
When you move your chin down, what happens? A double chin, right?
Now imagine you're eight months pregnant. That double-chin is going to be much more noticeable.
As a result, it's a good idea to have your client tilt her head back ever so slightly in your photos.
In the photo above, you can see how this helps extend the model's neckline and avoids a double chin.

Another benefit of having the model tilt her head back is that it creates a more powerful pose.
In this example, the model's head is tilted very slightly back, and the photographer is shooting slightly upwards toward the model.
The result is one confident-looking mom-to-be!
Follow these do's and don'ts of maternity photography, and you can create more beautiful pregnancy photos.
