Drone photography over cities?

Now if I'm correct, you can't fly a drone over a city.  But what get's me is all the drone photographs and video's that were clearly taken over the cities throughout America.

So how are they doing this?  Is there special permission that can easily be gotten for such approved flights?

Why do you think that a drone can't be flown over a city? I believe you'll find that, in the USA, it depends upon local ordinance. For example, at Logan airport, on the bus from the terminal to the car rental center, there are signs about flying drones in the Boston area. However, other cities are open season.

There are rules related to proximity to airports. And other things.

That said, it's also possible to get permission to fly near things that are "off limits". A local guy has managed to get footage of the top of the capitol building from a drone. Don't know how he managed it, but he did.

So, as is often the case, "it depends." You have to work the local situation wherever you are.
