How to take good silhouette photos

How to take a perfect silhouette photo? Every time I try, I still get some detail in the subject (unless it's like a far away tree or something.

Very simple...you have to expose for the sky. Or whatever light is around. Never expose for the subject.

Make sure the background is bright enough to overcome whatever silhouette you want.

Very good suggestions. You can also add some artificial light behind your subject if the available light isn't enough.

If you get close using the techniques described above, you can increase the sharpness of the silhouette by boosting blacks a little in post
-processing ( see 500px ).

Aim at the bright part of your frame, half-depress and hold. On most cameras this locks exposure and focus. I have found that depending on the distance to my subject (to be in shadow) I may have to manually refocus without releasing the shutter button, to get a nice crisp outline.Practice, have fun!
