... then cinema is truth 24 times a second.

Erica McDonald finds it at a slower pace:

Only rubes think photography is truth. At best it is realism. :)

"Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world." -Arnold Newman

Wonderful photos at the link!

A quote from Jean-Luc Goddard. I thought YOU would get it, HP!

I really like her style too. Natural with a touch of Diane Arbus thrown in for added interest.

Photography = truth is my biggest pet peeve. I don't care how important or famous the people who perpetuate that myth are. They are either rubes or con artists. If people understood how photographs have always been made we wouldn't have to waste time explaining why Photoshop isn't cheating or anything particularly new.

"In the very beginning, when the operator controls and regulates his time of exposure, when in the dark room the developer is mixed for detail, breath, flatness or contrast, faking has been resorted to. In fact every photograph is a fake from start to finish, a purely impersonal, unmanipulated photograph being practically impossible. When all is said, it still remains entirely a matter of degree and ability." - Edward Steichen

"All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth". -Richard Avedon

"People say photographs don't lie, mine do." - David LaChapelle

I thought you might like this statement from Mark Twain.

"No photograph ever was good, yet, of anybody--hunger and thirst and utter wretchedness overtake the outlaw who invented it! It transforms into desperadoes the meekest of men; depicts sinless innocence upon the pictured faces of ruffians; gives the wise man the stupid leer of a fool, and a fool an expression of more than earthly wisdom. If a man tries to look serious when he sits for his picture the photograph makes him look as solemn as an owl; if he smiles, the photograph smirks repulsively; if he tries to look pleasant, the photograph looks silly; if he makes the fatal mistake of attempting to seem pensive, the camera will surely write him down as an ass. The sun never looks through the photographic instrument that it does not print a lie. The piece of glass it prints it on is well named a "negative"--a contradiction--a misrepresentation--a falsehood. I speak feeling of this matter, because by turns the instrument has represented me to be a lunatic, a Soloman, a missionary, a burglar and an abject idiot, and I am neither.
- Mark Twain in Letter to the Sacramento Daily Union, written July 1, 1866"

Note the big "IF". I wasn't claiming it was. Just using a movie quote to get people to look.

I think Jacob Riis was trying to show truth with the camera, as well as Capa, and other journalists. But, it is always a reproduction of a scene. Not the scene itself.

The goal of the New Wave directors, like Goddard, was to capture real human emotion, not simply Hollywood "acting".

Hence the New Wave film quote. :)

A film (err video) that supports HP's position:

www.petapixel.com/2011/10/04/an-eye-open...t-photos-are-staged/

In my journalism course, I talk about the observer effect (using Heidegger's Uncertainty Principle). Would someone burn a flag in a corn field? Or would they go to the capital steps -- and wait for cameras to arrive?

Can news ever be unaffected by news gatherers? For example, wouldn't choosing to shoot from the Israeli side instead of the Palestinian side affect how WE (the viewers) perceive the event?
