price list/packages

new to this and want to start thinking about a price list. I thought i would hear from others first about how they price their deals, how they came up with that price, etc...

The farthest i have figured out is if I am doing an "event" (parties, gatherings, like that) is to charge a flat hourly rate.

But after that I draw a blank. LOL

Things to figure in are time, travel, post event processing/product delivery, materials such as paper,ink,packaging-Don't forget taxes, shipping and handling and profit margin so you don't charge less than it costs to produce your product

:agree: Know what your costs are and than go from there. Be aware of what others charge.

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

I always use .50/mile for traveling expenses. My portrait sessions are 90mins, I think about how many photos could I shoot in that time and think about how much it's worth. Check out photographers rates in your area and based your rate on what others charge. The area you live in, will be different from where I live. As cities, or small towns make a huge different as to what the client can afford.

Thats true about cities vs. small towns. Smaller towns can't afford the more expensive prices thus you'll rarely get any work there so you may have to consider "alternate rates" Another thing to keep in mind regarding smaller towns is communication with your customers. Build a relationship with them and communicate. We have a local photog here that pretty much has a monopoly on the area and we had a really bad experience with him and will never use his services again because f it Plus you also have word of mouth advertising that happens more prevalent in smaller towns so let's just say we're not the only ones that are aware of his horrible customer service.
