This was my first stab at wildlife photography with my Canon 7D and my new Canon EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens. I'm new to photography and want some opinions on what I can do to improve this pic with post editing. Thanks

Really nice! Good job!

I'm not sure why but the upper part keeps poking at me but I can't really tell for why.

Maybe sharpen it a little and adjust the coloring coming off the lake, other than that it's got really good composition, the use of light is great and it sets a good mood.

Thanks guys. I think I'll touch it up a bit in Lightroom and Photoshop

Well for me the bright water in the foreground draws my eye to it when I look at the bird. I would maybe use the lasso tool and separate the bright band then do a levels adjustment to it to tone it down, or crop it out. I would still maybe do a Level Adjust first over all though. It is a nice silhouette shot though.

Thanks man. I'll try your suggestions

That is a beautiful photo! I love the silhouette, the symmetry and the warm colors. But I do have to agree that there's something about it that draws the eye away from the bird itself... Looking closely I can tell it's very nicely focused but something seems to be drawing away from it.

I'd love to see what you've done with it if you edit again!

Canon, these are all positive comments by the way so please don't be offended by them.

Maybe it's the large area in the upper right corner? After looking at it again for a bit I keep thinking I either see or expect to see something there. Still not sure what it is though. Still a beautiful shot, color and composition.

Thinking about it now, maybe that's what makes it such a good picture, You find yourself looking for other things and then realizing there's nothing else and simply admiring the simplicity and peacefulness of a single duck on a pond?

I love that lens! One of my favorite telephotos I've ever tried.

The photo is very nice, I like the silhouettes. I'd probably play around with cropping and see if you come up with something you like. I agree with Joves' comments too. You might be able to even out the bright part of the water somewhat with the burn tool as well.

Thanks for the cc. I took it into Lightroom and adjusted it slightly. I cropped it as suggested, made the blacks a little blacker, gave it a warmer tone and sharpened it up.

Yes, that's better.

There a nervous energy hidden in this shot, and I've been trying to put my finger on it. This revision finally helped me identify what it is. The peaceful subject sitting on the placid water, and gentle warm colors are being countered by the twitchy looking bokeh in the area between the uniform horizontal lines near the birds head, and the smoothness of the dark shadows coming down from the top.

I think it looks good but the balance I think is better in the first without the duck so centered. I would have just cropped a little and maybe straightened it some, I like the contrast between the darker and lighter tones in the first one. I agree it has some interesting energy to it.

The original image is nice, lots going on with very little there. Grebes make great subjects! The crop (2nd one) is nicer imho, but the image should not be centered. Excellent effort for first time wildlife photo.

Keep in mind that you will constantly be challenged by the 100-400 in low light. Not impossible to do, you will just need to learn what the lens can do and how to best use it during those periods of light.
