Which settings are you using when taking a group portrait?

When you take a shoulder and head portrait which settings are you using? Do you select a specific focus point? or do you select all points? Which AF-Drive, One Shot, AI Servo or AI Focus? Something else?

I use the portrait mode.

One shot, camera selecting multiple focus points (beware which one) in Av mode to get more depth of field so everyone is in focus. Unless you are shooting a moving subject you shouldn't need AI servo or AI focus.

Depends on how the people are arranged. If they're all in the same plane of view (next to each other and straight) you can use a wider aperture and get more background blur. If they are behind each other, you'll have to go to 5.6 or f/8 to get them all reasonably in focus. Then focus on the ones at the front (the eye).

Don't worry about AI Servo. It's too slow on Canon cameras unless you're using a 7D or the 1D series, to make a difference. Just use One shot.

Mr Stealthy sums it up well but as with most things in photography, the best setting are the ones you think are best....

I suppose I could use that, but I want to learn my camera, not just point and shoot. :)

I imagine people will be behind each other. It would probably be the best way to arrange for a group shot. Thanks.
