Possible for cameras to be hacked?

4 years 2 weeks ago #475746 by Sean Lewitts
My photography meet up group yesterday started talking about computers getting hacked which lead some talking about cameras getting hacked.  I didn't see how this was possible unless wireless card in camera.  Even then, why would someone want to steal your photos?

Not sure if its possible, but a scary thought indeed. Us normal Joes likely have nothing to worry about, but I can see it being a real concern for pro photographers, celebs, sports figures, etc.

Hacking the actual camera no. To change what your camera does takes a firmware revision. Hacking, or grabbing a WiFi signal yes. It depends on the security of your points. If your WiFi is secure with a password needed to access both ends, then it is not easily compromised. It is like your home wireless system if you have one. Which you should have secured by passwords.

I sometimes go out doing what is called War Driving. What it is, is you, or a friend on a laptop driving around seeing how many open WiFi networks there are in an area. I am still amazed at how many people leave their home WiFi open. It is how many get into trouble by the more nefarious types, or their identities stolen too. So the lesson is if you have WiFi set up on your camera, secure it if it allows it.

Short realistic answer:  No

Now, not to say it's not possible completely.  Just realistically who would want to, and what they would be able to do would be very limited.  Moving forward, Joves made a good post.
