Making photography more fun during creative ruts?

I'm in one of those creative ruts and having a tough time getting out and getting good shots.

What have you done to make getting out more fun?

Grab a few friends and just head out for a few hours to have fun taking photos. I work in portraiture, so when I'm feeling stuck I force my friends to let me take playful or silly portraits, sometimes even just with my phone. Sometimes I'll avoid portraiture altogether and take shots of architecture, the city, landscapes...anything but portraits. That usually does the trick for me!

I'd take some time away from photography, if possible. Even if it's an afternoon. Just get away from it all and do something to recharge. Go for a hike. Take your kids to the zoo. Anything but work.

I'm kind of new to photography compared to many of you. What I do when I'm feeling in one of those "I can't find a good shot" moods.  Is take a break, put the camera down and come back to it in a few days or when the idea block hits me.

Add me to the list of people saying to take a break. Sometimes all you need is a few hours away from it all to get your creative juices flowing again.

I'm in my fifth straight 365 project...(366 2012 and 2016). When I get bored, I try new things.....

Why so serious?

Get out and shoot with a mission - photograph circles.  Photography letters.  Photography something green.  etc.

I'm with the others that have posted to try something new. I typically shoot street scenes, so if I'm not feeling it I head out to the country to do some landscapes or try photographing birds and other wildlife, just to challenge myself and find that excitement for photography again.

I joined a local photo - club.
Learning from each other, exchanging ideas, friendly discussions and critics, workshops, excursions, barbecues.........
We have a member which I gave quite a few tips and hints as she started; now she is better than me....... ;)

I can chime in on the importance of taking a break. However, everyone works through their creative ruts differently. For some, it's as easy as taking a walk with your camera until you've got something worthwhile. Personally, I do well with a little bit of structure. Sometime last year a friend bought me a copy of "The Photographer's Playbook" as a gift. I highly reccomend it - it offers a lot of interesting insight and some creative assignments that really deviate from the norm.
