Finding cool locations to photograph

7 years 4 months ago #506485 by Raymond Z
How are you finding cool spots to photograph with out leaving your home?   I'd like to plan photo hikes around areas I know I'll get good photos.

Can you suggest a website or how I can search for these vantage points?

Nothing beats good old fashioned location scouting by foot. The best spots are all your own and won't be found through an online search. That's my school of thought, anyway.

[font=Calibri, sans-serif]I recently read an article in my local newspaper about a photography club in my area and have considered joining them. They go to local parks or events to take pictures and help one another. I'm sure an online search for photography clubs in your city or county will give you a few results. Kelly's idea to visit local travel sites is a great place to start (I'm going to borrow that one - thank you)!

Check out national parks, scenic drives, trip advisor recommendations in your area – all really easy to find with a simple google search.

I have never really found that doing it online works at all. My preference is just driving around. You can do all of the research online all you want, but when you get somewhere the reality does not ever work out the same. I find that driving around that something always seems to popup.

Agreed. As much as I love using the internet to get ahead, all of my favorite locations to photograph have been stumbled upon by chance.

That's fine, but if you are taking trip for example, and only have a short time, maybe one sunset, driving around in a strange place ain't cutting it.  Best to have a plan....
