How to determine what exposure when using soft grad ND filter?

7 years 2 months ago #516818 by PMurphy
I'm new to ND filters.  Well technically I've not bought mine yet.  I'm just some other threads here about filters and it reminded me of my concerns.

So if you are looking at a foreground that is much darker than the sky.  How do you quickly determine what the exposure should be?

Are you supposed to be in manual mode with camera?

thank you for your help.

You just meter it normally with the filter in place. No magic here. You are just making the extreme lighting less extreme before it hits the sensor and meter. Shoot in whatever mode you normally shoot.

Agree. If you have square filters (Cokin, etc.)  you can shift the filter about to darken the area that needs it. I have both Grey and Blue Grad ND.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Its digital. Shoot, review, adjust and shoot again.

Why so serious?

People that shoot mirrorless cameras don't even need to do that. We adjust the exposure before taking the shot.
