How to take photos through a chain linked fence?

6 years 8 months ago #538823 by Ryan711
I've been trying to take photos of airliner landing and taking off, but there is this chained linked fence in my way.  Any suggestions to working around this?

Not to get off subject with the fence, I don't suppose any of you know if you are allowed to take photos of an airline landing from under their final approach path?  There is a spot from the start of the runway, where the airline is coming down to land, that is only 200 (guessing) feet or so above you.  It's in a parking lot.  Can you set up tripod and gear and photograph the plan with out getting in trouble?

If you're outside the fence, you should be okay. Even if it's not public property.

As for the fence, no. Get above it. Find higher ground, or bring a stepladder. The openings are just too small for a DSLR lens. I had this same problem at an animal rescue facility. Very frustrating.

I have some shots of cougars in a wildlife park. I was allowed to get close to the fence, Using f/4.5, I was able to focus on the cat  and the fence was so out of focus, it disappeared. If you are close to the fence this will work.

Another thought is to use a monopod and tripod extended all the way and hold the camera as high as you can. Fire with a remote and you may get over the fence. An articulated screen make it a bit easier.
Make: Canon
Model: Canon EOS 70D
Lens: EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
ISO: 4000
Aperture: f/4.5
Shutter speed: 1/1250 sec
Captured: Thu, 22 Jan 2015 9:19am

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

+1 for working with a low aperture and trying to get the fence so out of focus that it disappears/becomes recognizable. Always my first course of action when faced with this pesky situation...

I know this was posted a while ago, but another suggestion could be editing the fence out with Photoshop.

I'm curious -- how did the photo turn out?
