Is a ND filter better than exposure compensation

2 completely different items here.  ND filters is cutting the light before it makes it into the camera, you can slow down exposure times from this method.  Exposure compensation is just lightening or darkening your photos electronically.

So, why not just manually drop exposure or add more to it?  What's the purpose of exposure compensation if this can be done already while in manual mode?

Have you tried to do a long exposure in midday light (a waterfall, for example)? You can't use the settings required (long shutter time, low ISO) and get anywhere near the exposure required.

An ND filter will cut down the amount of light entering the lens, putting your shot into a manageable range for your required settings.

We seem to forget the the sun is bright. Think about the sunny 16 rule, and go from there for longer exposure. f/16, ISO 100, 1/100s. If you tried 1/2s on your shutter, your aperture would have to go to f/32, which most lenses won't. And that half second is probably not going to be long enough anyway.

The only option is to decrease the amount of light: later or earlier in the day, cloud cover, or ND filters.

As stated well by others is that the ND filter is a light blocker so you can drag the shutter speed. `
Exposure Compensation is how the camera treats the light in regards to the exposure. For Modes other that Manual it is use to make the keep the camera from over/under exposing depending on the light. When you do it in Manual you are choosing to over/under expose through the meter. But in the case of a  Nikon camera when you set the EC up in another mode, and go to Manual, your meter will be off by the same amount the EC was set at. So you have to zero it for the meter to be right. I found that out the hard way after trying out the EC with Aperture Mode. Since then I have never used either again.

You can just manually adjust the exposure. That's a different issue than ND filter use.

Why so serious?
