Purpose of a lens hood?

6 years 2 months ago #565069 by Jamie Lux
I managed to lose one of my lenses hood.   What is the purpose of having these?  Seems the only time I touch it is when I reverse it on my lens so it fits in my camera bag better.

Do I need it?

They have several purposes. First is that they block extraneous light from striking the lens, causing flare & ghosting, especially in daytime, outdoor shots where the Sun or other light source is near the perimeter of the frame.. Second, they can help protect a lens that is dropped if the angle is right.

they are relatively cheap if you replace it with a third party lens hood,
they do protect the glass from knocks and scratches, but main purpose is to prevent other light sources from contaminating the scene for example flair and glare from the sun.

Ok, so I better replace this than.  Would there be a difference with 3rd party to OEM one?

OEM might fit a little better and you have to be certain the 3rd party one is able to fit the lens in question. I use older ones that screw into the filter threads...

Here I am on location, and it rained (drizzled) all day. I went out anyway, but I wish I'd had the hoods with me (left them at home). Rain gear isn't adequate. Of course, my Velvet 85 doesn't have a hood anyway....
