What camera should I get for my first camera?

6 years 1 month ago #573060 by Purple-Talon
I have about $800 to buy a camera set (so with a camera bag, extra lens etc.) I am almost 16 so I am not going to buy an expensive camera. Right now I have a point and shoot. I have been looking at a cannon EOS Rebel SL2. Is this a good camera to start with? Do you have any suggestions?

Welcome to the site!

Are you OK with buying used?

My Camera Bag:

Canon 7D | 50mm f/1.2 | 17-40mm f/4 | 70-200mm f/2.8 | 320EX | 580EXII

I would also recommend used, because it will give you more lenses for your bucks.
An older body to start with: 40D, 50D... Look at the wear and tear to see how often it was used. Or find out how to determine the shutter count.

Would eBay be a good place to buy a used camera?

Also, I would like to do street photography as well as animals (Eg. Horses at shows and in fields, animals in zoos etc.) Would the body's you mentioned be good for that or is it more dependent upon the lens?

All cameras would be fine for that.
That is lens dependent.
The kit lens is nice and cheap to start with (18-55mm)
Look at the 50mm 1.8 as your second lens for street photography.
Both cheap options.

The Canon SL2 can be used for lots of different subjects, does not really excel at any one thing, except being an easy to learn family shooter.  Links for various opinions on camera selection -
