Not seeing change when I spin my Breakthough polarized filter

So I bought a breakthrough photography x4 polarizing filter, and when I spin this thing, nothing is happening.  I see a little more punchyness in my photos colors.  However you still see reflections both on water and glass.

Have you had problems with these filters?

Physics is a funny thing. You may not be able to remove all reflections depending upon the angles. It depends. Have you moved around? Straight on reflections won't be eliminated.

You should be able to see an effect if you look at the sky with the sun to the left or right of you (90 degrees). Clear changes in the color, more pronounced at high altitudes, I think.

G'day Adam

Gary [above] is on the mark with his comments ... and from personal experience, I have found too many 'togs do not understand / the shop has not described - the correct operation & use of the Polarising filter.

Without getting technical about light waves - the pola filter has its maximum effect when the camera is pointing 90 degrees away from the line of sunlight ... so if you are pointing towards or away from the line of sunlight, the effects are considerably minimised.

When it comes to reflections, it also relates to the angle the camera lens is to the surface of the water or glass you are photographing. So again as Gary says 'it depends'. Pola filters will not work 'real well' on car paintwork, but can do some small reductions to reflections

I suggest you hold the filter to your eye - make sure it's pointing the right way!! - and rotate it in your fingers and watch the effects before attaching to the camera, then you have got some idea of what to expect once fitted to the camera

Hope this helps

Quickly, polarizers don't polarize light.  They filter polarized light which, as mentioned above, is the light that is at right angles to the sun.  Spend a few hours on a sunny day experimenting and you will understand polarization without any problems.
