Best shutter speed when panning moving cars?

When you are photographing cars that are moving, what's the best shutter speed to use when panning?

My shots keep coming put blurry or don't show motion.  Wondering where I'm going wrong here.  Thank you.

Shutter speeds will vary greatly depending on what you’re trying to achieve. I’m talking anywhere from 1/25th all the way to 1/320 and faster.

When using lower shutter speeds, a tripod is a must. You need to make sure you aren’t creating blur from camera shake. Early on in my photography, I realize how nasty shake can be. A subject could have been super sharp, but the camera shake ruins the photo completely.

Now, there are two ways to catch a moving subject; catch it as it passes or follow it. Following it with lower shutter speeds will create background blur and freeze everything on the car except for the wheels. This will give that great visual of the car moving. Higher speeds will freeze everything. Next, you can catch a car passing and give it a little blur to make it look really fast.

Lastly, remember that every area of a road/race track will be different. The speed or the cars will vary too, so when you move spots, you will have to reassess speeds and shutter speeds.

Hope this helps! It’s a lot of trial and error! It’s a tough area of photography, so perhaps you can find some safe, busy roads to practice a lot.

A number of factors will come into play with this:

1. Ambient light
2. camera you are using
3. Lens you are using
4. ISO you have set
5. Aperture you have set

With that in mind, you might have aperture set around f/18, lower ISO, and start adjusting/testing 1/30 shutter speeds.  You should be close.
