G'day Sma

When you say "I am using the kit lens" ... what exact lens are you referring to? Is it the 18-55mm or do you also have the 55-200mm?

Whether you choose any of the "18-200" to "18-300" sort of lenses you are doing 2 things ... a) obtaining large amount of convenience, but b) losing a tiny bit of 'extreme sharpness'. ie: nothing is perfect

All these type of lenses will give good quality images up tp the 200mm part with some image quality fall off over 200mm ... where chromatic aberration becomes visible via red & blue lines at the sides of large objects / buildings etc.

When you also add "macro lens preferred" you might not be aware that the macro function on the above zoom lenses is a simple device to permit close focus to occur, often at the expense of some sharpness. If you want very good macro / close up images you will need to consider other lens options

If you can give us a bit more info about your current lenses AND the sort of photos you want to take, then we will be able to offer you much better information

Hope this helps

What Phil said. The macro setting on these lenses are semi close up settings. They are not truly macro or even close but they do help a little.

What they said, above.

And if you want a decent, inexpensive walk-around lens, get the Nikon 18-200.

Mostly, reset your expectations. You can't get high quality, flexible, and inexpensive all at the same time.
