How to photograph the moon rising, best settings to use with Canon 5D Mark III?

5 years 3 months ago #626331 by F Anderson
My parents bought me a Canon 5D Mark III last November and I've been glued with photography since.  I'm trying to photograph the moon rising and not sure how I can do this and not have it look so tiny.  I have a 70-200mm, 17-40mm and 24-70mm.  Oh and a 50mm.

What settings would be best and lens choice please?

G'day FA

Shooting the moon is one of our common things wherever we are across the world. Most of us get success with 'moon' shots using 600mm or more of lens so that we can get a 'good' shot of the actual moon.

With the 70-200 you have, while it is a damn fine lens, you won't get 'moon' shots, but you will get beaut landscapes with the full moon making up a significant point of interest

Remember that the moon is reflected sunshine, so exposures primarily of the moon need to equate to 'sunshine' settings, and so landscapes containing the moon will sometimes be difficult to expose for both parts of the image in the same frame. Most of us concentrate the exposure for the landscape and allow the moon to settle comfortably into the frame

Hope this helps

600 mm, or more. You must have magnification, and that 200mm won't do it.

Congrats on the equipment. Now learn about all of the parameters (such as lens choice and image size).

Well that a bummer.

I would need this lens to be 3x stronger.  Well so much for that.  I don't have budget for 600mm lens.  @#$#$ just looked up price and they are expensive!!

What about Sigma 60-600mm?  Is that a good lens?

I've used a 2x teleconverter with a 70-200. Still not a 600mm by any means, but it gets you twice as close without breaking the bank. It's nice to have that added reach sometimes, depending what you typically shoot.

The Sigma: don't. I could be wrong.

I know folks that use the 150-600 and are happy with it, so it's an option. Unless you really have a need for that kind of lens, I'd suggest renting one on occasion.

This was taken with a 600mm ƒ4 / D810 combo using
the ponderate central mode…

I can't believe how sharp that is!!!  Have you used that lens with any teleconverters?

The Devil knows I tried… but no chance. After the
AF Fine Tune of the previously said combo, I had
to forget using any of the three TC's on the market
as none was meeting my expectations.
