Full frame wide angle lens on crop sensor camera

What happens to the field of view if you use a full frame wide angle lens on a crop sensor camera?  Does it stay the same or get cut off?

The circle represents the lens projection across the camera's focal plane from a FF lens.  A cropped sensor will always record less than a FF sensor (50% less) regardless of the focal length. A lens designed for an APS-C sensor will create an image circle touching the corners of the cropped sensor box above.  The same focal length lens (identical lens), will produce the same FOV on all sensor formats (FF, APS-C, MFT, et al), the difference is the image sampling area will be different.

PS- A Full Frame sensor is the same recording size as 35mm film.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Nicely illustrated!

If you can find the desired focal length, it does work.  I've gotten nice results with the full frame Canon 17-40 on my crop Canon 50D.  This lens is not my first choice, it's a bit heavy by crop standards.  Which is the case with just about all FF zoom designs.
