How to determine length of long exposures past 30 seconds?

4 years 10 months ago #648559 by E Rodriguez
First post here.  I'm somewhat new to photography as of 8 months ago, but just finally getting  more serious about this.  I have a Nikon D750  and one lens - 24-70mm.

When you go with a long exposure past 30 seconds, the camera  needs to go into bulb mode.  How do you determine proper exposure after that 30 second line?

I don't know if this makes sense, I'm trying to understand this, so if I'm terms are wrong, my  apologies.

Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Most of us use a watch.

+1 on a watch/timer. Use a shutter release (wired or wireless) to control the shutter when in bulb mode. You can compute the amount of time based on a shorter exposure time and some math. Or you take a shot and chimp to see how it turned out.

Thank you everyone.  So when determining the length of time that goes by, are you doing the old trial and error routine and take a few shots to see how it all works and adjust?

Sorry, I'm new here and responded before seeing your link.  That link was very helpful.  Thank you for sharing that information.

PhotoPills is most folks' go to app for exposure calculation. There are a number of free exposure calculator apps out there and I'd highly recommend one instead of doing manual calculations, especially if you're shooting in dynamic conditions.
